Banks Peninsula, Akaroa French Connection Tour

Discover the history and heritage of Banks Peninsula and the French township of Akaroa. Celebrate Waitangi Day at Okains Bay, spend three nights in Canterbury’s oldest town Akaroa, to soak up the atmosphere, discover the history and meet some local artisans. Enjoy getting up close to some unique wildlife on a harbour cruise to see the Hector Dolphins and enjoy exploring rambling gardens. Tour starts and finishes in Christchurch. Group size 4-9 people.


Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Make your own way to Christchurch, you will be collected approximately 11am to commence your tour. 

Welcome to Christchurch lunch with views over the city from the top of the port hills, we will then look at the early history of Christchurch with a visit to Ferrymead Heritage Park, the replica Edwardian township celebrating the pioneers who transported their goods over the steep Bridle Path from Lyttelton to Heathcote Valley. Our overnight accommodation is at the seaside village of Sumner, enjoy a meal out tonight.

Day 2: Waitangi Day celebrating Maori and Colonial history

Be part of the Okains Bay Waitangi Day celebrations on Banks Peninsula. There will be a Powhiri for all attendees, the extensive Maori and Colonial Museum will be open for you to explore, with several workshops that you can participate, like string making, spoon carving, flax crafts, demonstrations to watch, the print shop will be open. Enjoy a hangi lunch and see the waka launch along with entertainments, we will assemble to make the journey to Akaroa for a three night’s stay.

Day 3: Welcome to Canterbury’s oldest town, founded in 1840 by French settlers.

Enjoy a day spent soaking up the history of Akaroa with a visit to the local museum, a tour around the most renown dwellings, a home and garden visit for lunch and a memorable visit to the famous Giant’s house with its 6 star garden of significance statis, a delight for the senses. You will be met with surprises around every corner in this glorious garden, a mix of roses vegetables, citrus, flowers. mosaiced steps, sculptural walls, welded steel sculptures and other creations. An extraordinary and unique experience.

Day 4: Akaroa natural attractions

A visit to Fishermans Bay garden a haven in the rugged landscape of the Banks Peninsula coastline. New Zealand native plants combined with a diverse array of non-native plants are used to create an utterly New Zealand ambience. After lunch we set sail to see the abundant wildlife of Akaroa Harbour. Our vessel is a rigged ketch which uses both motor and sail for a unique cruise to see Hectors dolphins, fur seals, yellow eyed penguins, petrels, mollymawks, gannets and terns, a special experience.

Day 5: Akaroa to Little River, Christchurch

Today we say goodbye to Akaroa and travel the bays towards Christchurch, visit Barry’s Bay Cheese, to sample handmade cheese, and enjoy time at Little River before returning to Christchurch.
