Nelson Great Taste & Golden Bay Cycle Tour

Enjoy biking on some quiet country roads in Golden Bay as well as coastal sections of the Nelson Great Tastes Trail & explore some of the special attractions of the region by bike on this unique cycle tour.

Your Nelson Great Taste and Golden Bay Cycle Trail is a 5 day supported cycle tour through magnificent scenery with plenty of stops to enjoy the region’s fabulous cuisine. The Great Taste Trail includes local restaurants, salmon fishing, a ferry ride, and plenty of cycling to work up an appetite for the next leg of your cycle trail.


You will need a moderate level of fitness to enjoy the Great Taste Cycle Ride and have some off-road experience cycling on shingle surfaces.

Cycle Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Nelson to Pohara - Approx. 50km ride

Pick-up from Nelson mid-morning, cycle from Nelson to Rabbit Island to catch the ferry to Mapua for lunch overlooking the water. Enjoy the drive over the Takaka Hill and then bike from Uruwhenua on the central Takaka road to our Motel accommodation in Pohara close to the beach, dinner at a local restaurant tonight. LD

 

Day 2: Pohara - Collingwood - Approx. 35km ride

Bus to the start of the Heaphy Track, walk to the swing bridge and visit Browns Hut this is where you will start your cycling for the day.  Cycle to the Salisbury Bridge to look at a famous scene from LOTR film. Continue cycling to the famous Bainham Store for morning tea. The store has been in the same family for four generations, since it opened in 1928. Enjoy spending time looking at the well-stocked shelves and collection of fine china, try an expresso coffee or a pot of tea and freshly baked scone.  Next stop on your ride will be Courthouse Café in Collingwood. Take time out to explore Collingwood, the museum, sandy coastline or just relax viewing the scenery in a beautiful quite place of NZ. Enjoy a meal out tonight BLD


Day 3: Collingwood to Whanganui Inlet, Puponga to Collingwood - Approx. 50km ride
Begin cycling this morning from Pakawau north of Collingwood to the picturesque Wanganui Inlet area, enjoy lunch along the way at a café, continue cycling to the end of the road, then we return to Puponga to ride from there back to Collingwood with great views over the bay and estuaries. Dinner out tonight. BLD 


Day 4: Collingwood- Waikoropupu Springs-Pohara - Approx. 38km ride

Drive to Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs to see for yourself the clearest spring water in the world enjoy the bush walk around the springs and read about the unique features of this special place. Then cycle through Takaka to the Anatoki River to do some salmon fishing (you can pay to have your catch smoked to take home and enjoy later). After lunch either cycle to Pohara or take a seat on the bus and then enjoy an afternoon cycling around the bays or exploring the grove bush walk. Dinner at a local beach restaurant. BD.


Day 5: Pohara to Kaiteriteri Beach to Nelson - Approx. 35km ride
Enjoy cycling from Kaiteriteri Beach to Mapua, along the Great Taste Cycle Trail, have lunch overlooking the water at Mapua wharf before busing to Nelson by 3pm when your tour ends. BL.


Departure Dates

Tours operate on set departure dates. However for groups of six or more people we can look at additional tour dates.
Bikes and Bike Hire: If you are bringing your own bike and helmet, make sure it is in good condition (recently serviced) and you have a spare inner tube.


Degree of Difficulty

You will need a moderate level of fitness with some off road experience biking on shingle surfaces.

Biking is grades 1-2 with optional grade 3 biking for those who want it.
