Upper East Coast of the South Island Tour

A tour to celebrate the re-creation of land, roads, and people’s lives after two of the most powerful earthquakes in the recent history of NZ. See the new geology, stand on the uplifted foreshore and travel on the rebuilt SHW1 reconstructed to connect communities back together. Hear of personal experiences of people who have been affected by the events of nature. A tour to celebrate enduring and adaptability in modern times, we welcome your support of local business in the recovering Kaikoura, North Canterbury and central Christchurch areas.

Tour starts in Blenheim and finishes in Christchurch. Group size 4-9 people.


Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Blenheim to Kaikoura

8am. On leaving Blenheim we take the old coach road track around the lagoons to follow the coastline, our first stop is to an historic homestead which has survived the quakes thanks to the forward thinking and work of its builder owner who spent 15 years strengthening the triple brick home prior to the first shakes. See the bunker Alex and Peter lived in while the quakes were at their worst. We will visit the uplifted Marfells and Ward Beaches on our journey on the newly constructed highway to Kaikoura. See the reformed rock faces and uplifted seabed along the journey, walk on the newly completed Ohau Point walkway to see how the seals have adjusted.

Day 2: Kaikoura and surrounds

Visit Kaikoura Peninsula, the historic Fyffe House, local museums, picnic lunch at Ninns Binn crayfish caravan, followed by a drive down the coast to the small coastal settlement of Oaro and the Conway River, returning to Kaikoura, and a free night to dine as you wish.

Day 3: Kaikoura to Amberley

Inland Kaikoura route for a farm visit and tour to see for yourself Lake Rebekah that was created in the Nov 2016 quake. We will have a picnic lunch on the farm today. Stop in at the historic Hurunui hotel and pass through the North Canterbury townships of Culverden, Waikari on our way to Amberley. After dinner tonight we will have dessert at the home of local artist Jenny Cooper. Jenny was one of the team who created the Crack’d for Christchurch memorial mosaic art piece from broken china donated by the public following the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes. This will be a special evening.

Day 4: Amberley to Christchurch City

A tiki tour of the new subdivision’s in North Canterbury on our way to central Christchurch with a stop to admire Flora and Otto’s mosaic chair in the botanic gardens. Have a bite of lunch at The Riverside Market with time to explore the complex, before we visit the Christchurch quake museum and a tram ride around the central city, before arriving at our accommodation and dinner out tonight.

Day 5: Christchurch shorelines and skyline

We travel to Sumner Beach, to touch the shoreline before travelling over Evans Pass to Lyttleton Harbour, travel back through the tunnel to the Heathcote Valley to enjoy the Gondola ride to the summit.  with 360° views across the cityscape of Christchurch, Canterbury Plains to the high peaks of the Southern Alps, dramatic views of Banks Peninsula, Lake Ellesmere and Lyttelton Harbour. Looking north the beaches of Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean unfold to the distant Kaikoura Peninsula where your journey began. Your tour finishes midafternoon.
